SHREEMAD BHAGAVAD GEETA CHAPTER - 2 PART - 1

atha dviteeyOdhyaayaH |

 सञ्जय उवाच ।                                                                                                                                                         saMjaya uvaacha |

Sanjay told:

तं तथा कृपयाविष्टमश्रुपूर्णाकुलेक्षणम् ।
विषीदन्तमिदं वाक्यमुवाच मधुसूदनः ॥ 1 ॥

taM tathaa kRupayaaviShTamaSrupoorNaakulEkShaNam |
viSheedantamidaM vaakyamuvaacha madhusoodanaH || 1 ||

Meaning - Seeing Arjun like this who is being compassion, sorrowful and troubled eyes filled with tears , Lord Madhusudana said these words.

श्रीभगवानुवाच ।                                                                                                                                     Sreebhagavaanuvaacha | 
Lord Krishna told: 

कुतस्त्वा कश्मलमिदं विषमे समुपस्थितम् ।
अनार्यजुष्टमस्वर्ग्यमकीर्तिकरमर्जुन ॥ 2 ॥

kutastvaa kaSmalamidaM viShamE samupasthitam |
anaaryajuShTamasvargyamakeertikaramarjuna || 2 ||

Meaning - From where did you achieve this ignorance  in this contrasted/odd situation. This is  applicable for those who don't understand the value of life. This ignorance will not led you to heaven and also cause infamy .

क्लैब्यं मा स्म गमः पार्थ नैतत्त्वय्युपपद्यते ।
क्षुद्रं हृदयदौर्बल्यं त्यक्त्वोत्तिष्ठ परन्तप ॥ 3 ॥

klaibyaM maa sma gamaH paartha naitattvayyupapadyatE |
kShudraM hRudayadaurbalyaM tyaktvOttiShTha paraMtapa || 3 ||

Meaning - O Parth! Don't get this impotence. This doesn't suit you. O Parantap! Be prepared/stand up for the war by rejecting the mean weakness of heart.

अर्जुन उवाच ।                                                                                                       arjuna uvaacha |

Arjun said:

कथं भीष्ममहं साङ्ख्ये द्रोणं च मधुसूदन ।
इषुभिः प्रतियोत्स्यामि पूजार्हावरिसूदन ॥ 4 ॥

kathaM bheeShmamahaM saankhyE drONaM cha madhusoodana |

iShubhiH pratiyOtsyaami poojaarahavarisoodana || 4 ||

Meaning -  O Madhusudana! How shall I attack with arrow to these respected personalities like Bheesma and Drona in this battlefield?

गुरूनहत्वा हि महानुभावान्श्रेयो भोक्तुं भैक्ष्यमपीह लोके ।
हत्वार्थकामांस्तु गुरुनिहैव भुञ्जीय भोगान्‌உरुधिरप्रदिग्धान् ॥ 5 ॥

guroonahatvaa hi mahaanubhaavaanSrEyO bhOktuM bhaikShyamapeeha lOkE |
hatvaarthakaamaaMstu gurunihaiva bhunjeeya bhOgaanrudhirapradigdhaan || 5 ||

Meaning - In this world,  surely it is better to beg for living without killing the great personalities who are my preceptors. They might be wanting of worldly profit. But as teachers if they are being killed then each object enjoyed by us would be blood stained.

न चैतद्विद्मः कतरन्नो गरीयो यद्वा जयेम यदि वा नो जयेयुः ।
यानेव हत्वा न जिजीविषामस्ते‌உवस्थिताः प्रमुखे धार्तराष्ट्राः ॥ 6 ॥

na chaitadvidmaH katarannO gareeyO yadvaa jayEma yadi vaa nO jayEyuH |
yaanEva hatvaa na jijeeviShaamastEvasthitaaH pramukhE dhaartaraaShTraaH || 6 ||

Meaning -  Even we don't know what is best for us - to win them or to be won by them. Killing whom we surely don't want to live. Those sons of  Dhritarastra stand in front of us  in this battle ground.

कार्पण्यदोषोपहतस्वभावः पृच्छामि त्वां धर्मसंमूढचेताः ।
यच्छ्रेयः स्यान्निश्चितं ब्रूहि तन्मे शिष्यस्ते‌உहं शाधि मां त्वां प्रपन्नम् ॥ 7 ॥

kaarpaNyadOShOpahatasvabhaavaH pRuchCaami tvaaM dharmasaMmooDhachEtaaH |
yachCrEyaH syaanniSchitaM broohi tanmE SiShyastEhaM Saadhi maaM tvaaM prapannam || 7 ||

Meaning -  Because of silly faults/weakness I've forgotten my duties and lost all composure. In this situation I'm asking you that which is preferable/better  to me; surely tell.  I am your disciple  and surrender myself to you. Kindly advise me. 

न हि प्रपश्यामि ममापनुद्याद्यच्छोकमुच्छोषणमिन्द्रियाणाम् ।
अवाप्य भूमावसपत्नमृद्धं राज्यं सुराणामपि चाधिपत्यम् ॥ 8 ॥

na hi prapaSyaami mamapanudyaadyachCOkamuchCOShaNamindriyaaNaam |
avaapya bhoomaavasapatnamRuddhaM raajyaM suraaNaamapi chaadhipatyam || 8 ||

Meaning -  There is no instrument being seen to me to get rid of my grief of exploitation of senses . I can not banish this grief even getting the prosperous kingdom on earth devoid of/without enemy  like supremacy of Gods.

सञ्जय उवाच ।

saMjaya uvaacha |

Sanjay told:
एवमुक्त्वा हृषीकेशं गुडाकेशः परन्तप ।
न योत्स्य इति गोविन्दमुक्त्वा तूष्णीं बभूव ह ॥ 9 ॥

Evamuktvaa hRuSheekESaM guDaakESaH paraMtapa |
na yOtsya iti gOvindamuktvaa tooShNeeM babhoova ha || 9 ||

Meaning - Arjun, the conqueror of enemies told Lord Krishna, "O Govinda! I'll not fight" and became silent.

तमुवाच हृषीकेशः प्रहसन्निव भारत ।

सेनयोरुभयोर्मध्ये विषीदन्तमिदं वचः ॥ 10 ॥

tamuvacha hRuSheekESaH prahasanniva bhaarata |
sEnayOrubhayOrmadhyE viSheedantamidaM vachaH || 10 ||

Meaning - O Bharata (Dhritarastra) ! At that moment Lord Krishna said these words (as if) with smile to mournful Arjun amidst the soldiers of both sides.

श्रीभगवानुवाच ।

Sreebhagavaanuvaacha |

Lord Krishna told :

अशोच्यानन्वशोचस्त्वं प्रज्ञावादांश्च भाषसे ।

गतासूनगतासूंश्च नानुशोचन्ति पण्डिताः ॥ 11 ॥

aSOchyananvaSOchastvaM pragnyaavaadaaMScha bhaaShasE |

gataasoonagatasooMScha naanuSOchanti paNDitaaH || 11 ||

Meaning - Saying words of wisdom, You are mourning for those who are not worthy of it. Those who are truly wise do not grieve for living and nor for dead.

न त्वेवाहं जातु नासं न त्वं नेमे जनाधिपाः ।
न चैव न भविष्यामः सर्वे वयमतः परम् ॥ 12 ॥

na tvEvaahaM jaatu naasaM na tvaM nEmE janaadhipaaH |
Na chaiva na bhabhiShyaamaH sarvE vayamataH param || 12 ||

Meaning  -  This has never happened that I was not there in the past nor you were, nor all these kings were and it's not that in future we will not be there.

देहिनो‌உस्मिन्यथा देहे कौमारं यौवनं जरा ।
तथा देहान्तरप्राप्तिर्धीरस्तत्र न मुह्यति ॥ 13 ॥

dEhinOsminyathaa dEhE kaumaaraM yauvanaM jaraa |
tathaa dEhaantarapraaptirdheerastratra na muhyati || 13 ||

Meaning  -  As the soul in the human body continuously move forward from the state of childhood to young age and then the state of old age; thus the soul gets another body upon death. A calm/self-possessed person doesn't get infatuated in these changes.

मात्रास्पर्शास्तु कौन्तेय शीतोष्णसुखदुःखदाः ।

आगमापायिनो‌உनित्यास्तांस्तितिक्षस्व भारत ॥ 14 ॥

MaatraasparSaastu countEya SeetOShNasukhaduHkhadaaH |
aagamaapaayinOnityaastaaMstitikShasva bhaarata || 14 ||

Meaning  -  A (transient/) short term arise and (disappearance/)vanishing of happiness and sorrow are as like as the upcoming and going of the winter and summer seasons. O Bharata! These are produced because of material contact. And man should learn to bear those with firm feelings.

यं हि न व्यथयन्त्येते पुरुषं पुरुषर्षभ ।
समदुःखसुखं धीरं सो‌உमृतत्वाय कल्पते ॥ 15 ॥

yaM hi na vyathayantyEtE puruShaM puruSharShabha |

samaduHkhasukhaM dheeraM sOmRutatvaaya kalpatE || 15 ||

Meaning  -O Arjuna! He is suitable for liberation who does not disturbed in happiness and sorrow and remain equal in both situation.

SHREEMAD BHAGAVAD GEETA CHAPTER -1 PART - 3

येषामर्थे काङ्क्षितं नो राज्यं भोगाः सुखानि च ।
त इमेऽवस्थिता युद्धे प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा धनानि च ॥ 33 ॥

yēṣāmarthē kāṅkṣitaṃ nō rājyaṃ bhōgāḥ sukhāni cha ।
ta imē'vasthitā yuddhē prāṇāṃstyaktvā dhanāni cha ॥ 33 ॥

Meaning - For those who we desire kingdom, enjoyment and happiness, they are present in this battle field by giving up lives and wealth.

 आचार्याः पितरः पुत्रास्तथैव च पितामहाः ।

मातुलाः श्वशुराः पौत्राः श्यालाः सम्बन्धिनस्तथा ॥ 34 ॥

āchāryāḥ pitaraḥ putrāstathaiva cha pitāmahāḥ ।

mātulāḥ śvaśurāḥ pautrāḥ śyālāḥ sambandhinastathā ॥ 34 ॥

एतान्न हन्तुमिच्छामि घ्नतोऽपि मधुसूदन ।

अपि त्रैलोक्यराज्यस्य हेतोः किं नु महीकृते ॥ 35 ॥

ētānna hantumichChāmi ghnatō'pi madhusūdana ।

api trailōkyarājyasya hētōḥ kiṃ nu mahīkṛtē ॥ 35 ॥

Meaning -   

              Teachers, fathers,sons,grand-fathers, maternal uncles, father-in-laws, grand sons, brother-in-laws and relatives - O Madhusudana! Even if I get killed, (I) don't want to kill them in exchange of the countries of the three worlds, leave (to talk) about this earth.(34 & 35) 

निहत्य धार्तराष्ट्रान्नः का प्रीतिः स्याज्जनार्दन ।

पापमेवाश्रयेदस्मान्हत्वैतानाततायिनः ॥ 36 ॥

 nihatya dhārtarāṣṭrānnaḥ kā prītiḥ syājjanārdana ।

pāpamēvāśrayēdasmānhatvaitānātatāyinaḥ ॥ 36 ॥

Meaning  - O Janardana! By killing the sons of Dhritarastra what happiness would we get. Killing these desperados (criminals) surely we'll commit sin.

तस्मान्नार्हा वयं हन्तुं धार्तराष्ट्रान्स्वबान्धवान् ।
स्वजनं हि कथं हत्वा सुखिनः स्याम माधव ॥ 37 ॥

tasmānnārhā vayaṃ hantuṃ dhārtarāṣṭrānsvabāndhavān ।
svajanaṃ hi kathaṃ hatvā sukhinaḥ syāma mādhava ॥ 37 ॥

Meaning  -  So we aren't fit/right to kill the sons and relatives of Dhritarashtra. O Madhava! Killing the family members how would we be happy?

यद्यप्येते न पश्यन्ति लोभोपहतचेतसः ।
कुलक्षयकृतं दोषं मित्रद्रोहे च पातकम् ॥ 38 ॥

 yadyapyētē na paśyanti lōbhōpahatachētasaḥ ।

kulakṣayakṛtaṃ dōṣaṃ mitradrōhē cha pātakam ॥ 38 ॥

Meaning  - But still they don't see the fault which led to ruin/extinction of families and sins committed against their friends because of the greed that overpowered their mind.

कथं न ज्ञेयमस्माभिः पापादस्मान्निवर्तितुम् ।
कुलक्षयकृतं दोषं प्रपश्यद्भिर्जनार्दन ॥ 39 ॥

kathaṃ na jñēyamasmābhiḥ pāpādasmānnivartitum ।

kulakṣayakṛtaṃ dōṣaṃ prapaśyadbhirjanārdana ॥ 39 ॥

Meaning  - O Janardana!  How would be not known by us who see the fault which led to extinction of families to relief from this sin.

कुलक्षये प्रणश्यन्ति कुलधर्माः सनातनाः ।
धर्मे नष्टे कुलं कृत्स्नमधर्मोऽभिभवत्युत ॥ 40 ॥

kulakṣayē praṇaśyanti kuladharmāḥ sanātanāḥ ।

dharmē naṣṭē kulaṃ kṛtsnamadharmō'bhibhavatyuta ॥ 40 ॥

Meaning  - The eternal customs of family is being destroyed by the extinction of family. And the entire family is being involved in the unrighteousness by the destruction of customs.

अधर्माभिभवात्कृष्ण प्रदुष्यन्ति कुलस्त्रियः ।
स्त्रीषु दुष्टासु वार्ष्णेय जायते वर्णसङ्करः ॥ 41 ॥

adharmābhibhavātkṛṣṇa praduṣyanti kulastriyaḥ ।

strīṣu duṣṭāsu vārṣṇēya jāyatē varṇasaṅkaraḥ ॥ 41 ॥

Meaning - O Krishna! The women of families become impure when unrighteousness becomes important in families. O Varsneya! Unwanted children being produced due to the downfall of womanhood.

सङ्करो नरकायैव कुलघ्नानां कुलस्य च ।
पतन्ति पितरो ह्येषां लुप्तपिण्डोदकक्रियाः ॥ 42 ॥

saṅkarō narakāyaiva kulaghnānāṃ kulasya cha ।

patanti pitarō hyēṣāṃ luptapiṇḍōdakakriyāḥ ॥ 42 ॥

Meaning - Because of the growth of unwanted children, there starts the hellish life surely for the family and also for those who destroy the familial customs. The forefathers/ancestors of these families fall as there is an end in the oblation of rice-balls and water offered to the deceased ancestors.

दोषैरेतैः कुलघ्नानां वर्णसङ्करकारकैः ।

उत्साद्यन्ते जातिधर्माः कुलधर्माश्च शाश्वताः ॥ 43 ॥

dōṣairētaiḥ kulaghnānāṃ varṇasaṅkarakārakaiḥ ।

utsādyantē jātidharmāḥ kuladharmāścha śāśvatāḥ ॥ 43 ॥

Meaning - People who destroy/demolish the family customs and produce unwanted children, because of their bad act the eternal activities of caste and family customs get destroyed.

उत्सन्नकुलधर्माणां मनुष्याणां जनार्दन ।
नरकेऽनियतं वासो भवतीत्यनुशुश्रुम ॥ 44 ॥

utsannakuladharmāṇāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ janārdana ।

narakē'niyataṃ vāsō bhavatītyanuśuśruma ॥ 44 ॥

Meaning - O Janardana! I have heard from preceptors' tradition that people who destroy the customary observances of family(kula-dharma) always live in hell.

अहो बत महत्पापं कर्तुं व्यवसिता वयम् ।

यद्राज्यसुखलोभेन हन्तुं स्वजनमुद्यताः ॥ 45 ॥

ahō bata mahatpāpaṃ kartuṃ vyavasitā vayam ।

yadrājyasukhalōbhēna hantuṃ svajanamudyatāḥ ॥ 45 ॥

Meaning - Oh! How it is a surprise that we are all going to do a sinful act by killing our relatives because of greed of enjoyment of kingdom.

यदि मामप्रतीकारमशस्त्रं शस्त्रपाणयः ।
धार्तराष्ट्रा रणे हन्युस्तन्मे क्षेमतरं भवेत् ॥ 46 ॥

yadi māmapratīkāramaśastraṃ śastrapāṇayaḥ ।
dhārtarāṣṭrā raṇē hanyustanmē kṣēmataraṃ bhavēt ॥ 46 ॥

Meaning - If the armed warriors the sons of Dhritarastra killed me in the battle-field who is unarmed/weaponless and not doing any counter-action /retaliation that will be beneficial/good for me.

सञ्जय उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वार्जुनः सङ्ख्ये रथोपस्थ उपाविशत् ।
विसृज्य सशरं चापं शोकसंविग्नमानसः ॥ 47 ॥

sañjaya uvācha ।
ēvamuktvārjunaḥ saṅkhyē rathōpastha upāviśat ।
visṛjya saśaraṃ chāpaṃ śōkasaṃvignamānasaḥ ॥ 47 ॥

Meaning - Sanjay said:

                     In the battle field  saying this Arjun put his bow and arrow aside and sat on the seat of the chariot with mentally disturbed/distracted because of sorrow.

ॐ तत्सदिति श्रीमद्भगवद्गीतासूपनिषत्सु ब्रह्मविद्यायां योगशास्त्रे श्रीकृष्णार्जुनसंवादे

ōṃ tatsaditi śrīmadbhagavadgītāsūpaniṣatsu brahmavidyāyāṃ yōgaśāstrē śrīkṛṣṇārjunasaṃvādē

SHREEMAD BHAGAVAD GEETA CHAPTER -1 PART - 2

काश्यश्च परमेष्वासः शिखण्डी च महारथः ।
धृष्टद्युम्नो विराटश्च सात्यकिश्चापराजितः ॥ 17 ॥

  kāśyaścha paramēṣvāsaḥ śikhaṇḍī cha mahārathaḥ ।

dhṛṣṭadyumnō virāṭaścha sātyakiśchāparājitaḥ ॥ 17 ॥

Meaning - Great archer the king of Kashi, warrior Shikhandee, Dhristadyumna, Virata and unconquered/undefeated Satyaki - all sounded their conches.

द्रुपदो द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्वशः पृथिवीपते ।
सौभद्रश्च महाबाहुः शङ्खान्दध्मुः पृथक्पृथक् ॥ 18 ॥

drupadō draupadēyāścha sarvaśaḥ pṛthivīpatē ।

saubhadraścha mahābāhuḥ śaṅkhāndadhmuḥ pṛthakpṛthak ॥ 18 ॥

Meaning - O king! Drupada the king of Panchal, sons of Draupadi and the son of Subhadra etc. all sounded their own conches.

स घोषो धार्तराष्ट्राणां हृदयानि व्यदारयत् ।
नभश्च पृथिवीं चैव तुमुलो व्यनुनादयन् ॥ 19 ॥

 sa ghōṣō dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṃ hṛdayāni vyadārayat ।

nabhaścha pṛthivīṃ chaiva tumulō vyanunādayan ॥ 19 ॥

Meaning - That loud sound became noisy/tumultuous which splitted the hearts of the sons of Dhritarashtra by sounding the earth and the sky.

 अथ व्यवस्थितान्दृष्ट्वा धार्तराष्ट्रान्कपिध्वजः ।

प्रवृत्ते शस्त्रसम्पाते धनुरुद्यम्य पाण्डवः ॥ 20 ॥

atha vyavasthitāndṛṣṭvā dhārtarāṣṭrānkapidhvajaḥ ।
pravṛttē śastrasampātē dhanurudyamya pāṇḍavaḥ ॥ 20 ॥

Meaning - Thereafter seeing the sons of Dhritarastra being arranged/organised/systematic,  Arjun, the son of Pandu who seated on the chariot attached with the flag marked out of the picture of Hanuman,  determined to flight the arrow  by lifting up the bow.

हृषीकेशं तदा वाक्यमिदमाह महीपते।

अर्जुन उवाच ।

सेनयोरुभयोर्मध्ये रथं स्थापय मेऽच्युत ॥ 21 ॥

hṛṣīkēśaṃ tadā vākyamidamāha mahīpatē।

arjuna uvācha ।

sēnayōrubhayōrmadhyē rathaṃ sthāpaya mē'chyuta ॥ 21 ॥

Meaning - Arjun said, --

                  O king! Arjun said these words to Lord Srikrishna, O Imperishable! Kindly put my chariot in between the soldiers of both sides.

यावदेतान्निरीक्षेऽहं योद्धुकामानवस्थितान् ।

कैर्मया सह योद्धव्यमस्मिन्रणसमुद्यमे ॥ 22 ॥

yāvadētānnirīkṣē'haṃ yōddhukāmānavasthitān ।

kairmayā saha yōddhavyamasminraṇasamudyamē ॥ 22 ॥

Meaning  - I'll see all of them who present here with the desire of fighting and also in this great examination of weapons with whom I have to fight.

योत्स्यमानानवेक्षेऽहं य एतेऽत्र समागताः ।

धार्तराष्ट्रस्य दुर्बुद्धेर्युद्धे प्रियचिकीर्षवः ॥ 23 ॥

yōtsyamānānavēkṣē'haṃ ya ētē'tra samāgatāḥ ।

dhārtarāṣṭrasya durbuddhēryuddhē priyachikīrṣavaḥ ॥ 23 ॥ 

Meaning - Let me see them who gathered here to fight with a desire to please Duryodhana, the stupid son of Dhritarastra.

सञ्जय उवाच ।
एवमुक्तो हृषीकेशो गुडाकेशेन भारत ।
सेनयोरुभयोर्मध्ये स्थापयित्वा रथोत्तमम् ॥ 24 ॥

sañjaya uvācha ।

ēvamuktō hṛṣīkēśō guḍākēśēna bhārata ।
sēnayōrubhayōrmadhyē sthāpayitvā rathōttamam ॥ 24 ॥

Meaning - Sanjay said,

O Bharatvanshi! Lord Krishna took that excellent charriot and put it in between the soldiers of both sides, because of what Arjun said.

भीष्मद्रोणप्रमुखतः सर्वेषां च महीक्षिताम् ।

उवाच पार्थ पश्यैतान्समवेतान्कुरूनिति ॥ 25 ॥

bhīṣmadrōṇapramukhataḥ sarvēṣāṃ cha mahīkṣitām ।

uvācha pārtha paśyaitānsamavētānkurūniti ॥ 25 

Meaning  - Infront of Bheesma, Drona and also all other kings of the whole world, Lord Shrikrishna said: O parth! see all the Kauravas being gathered here.

तत्रापश्यत्स्थितान्पार्थः पितॄनथ पितामहान् ।
आचार्यान्मातुलान्भ्रातॄन्पुत्रान्पौत्रान्सखींस्तथा ॥ 26 ॥

tatrāpaśyatsthitānpārthaḥ pitṝnatha pitāmahān ।
āchāryānmātulānbhrātṝnputrānpautrānsakhīṃstathā ॥ 26 ॥

Meaning- Arjun saw his paternal uncles, great grand-fathers, preceptors, maternal uncles,  brothers, sons, grandsons,father-in-laws, relatives and also friends of the soldiers of both sides, who stood there. ( 26 & 27 )

श्वशुरान्सुहृदश्चैव सेनयोरुभयोरपि ।
तान्समीक्ष्य स कौन्तेयः सर्वान्बन्धूनवस्थितान् ॥ 27 ॥

śvaśurānsuhṛdaśchaiva sēnayōrubhayōrapi ।
tānsamīkṣya sa kauntēyaḥ sarvānbandhūnavasthitān ॥ 27 ॥

कृपया परयाविष्टो विषीदन्निदमब्रवीत्।

अर्जुन उवाच ।

दृष्ट्वेमं स्वजनं कृष्ण युयुत्सुं समुपस्थितम् ॥ 28 ॥

kṛpayā parayāviṣṭō viṣīdannidamabravīt।

arjuna uvācha ।

dṛṣṭvēmaṃ svajanaṃ kṛṣṇa yuyutsuṃ samupasthitam ॥ 28 ॥

Meaning  - Seeing all those relatives who remained there, Arjun the son of Kunti being more compassionate and with sorrow said this -

                                 ARJUN TOLD:

O Krishna! Seeing these relatives being gathered here (in front of me) with a desire to fight;  (27 & 28) 

सीदन्ति मम गात्राणि मुखं च परिशुष्यति ।
वेपथुश्च शरीरे मे रोमहर्षश्च जायते ॥ 29 ॥

sīdanti mama gātrāṇi mukhaṃ cha pariśuṣyati ।
vēpathuścha śarīrē mē rōmaharṣaścha jāyatē ॥ 29 ॥

Meaning  - My body parts are lacking in rigor and mouth is drying. My whole body is shivering and I have got goosebumps.(29)


गाण्डीवं स्रंसते हस्तात्त्वक्चैव परिदह्यते ।
न च शक्नोम्यवस्थातुं भ्रमतीव च मे मनः ॥ 30 ॥

gāṇḍīvaṃ sraṃsatē hastāttvakchaiva paridahyatē ।
na cha śaknōmyavasthātuṃ bhramatīva cha mē manaḥ ॥ 30 ॥

Meaning  - My famous Gandeev (bow and arrow) is falling from my hand and also my skin is burning. I am not even capable to stand here and my mind is wandering about.(30)

निमित्तानि च पश्यामि विपरीतानि केशव ।
न च श्रेयोऽनुपश्यामि हत्वा स्वजनमाहवे ॥ 31 ॥

 nimittāni cha paśyāmi viparītāni kēśava ।

na cha śrēyō'nupaśyāmi hatvā svajanamāhavē ॥ 31 ॥

Meaning - O Keshav! I am seeing the causes of opposite things and also not seeing welfare by killing our own relatives in the war.


न काङ्क्षे विजयं कृष्ण न च राज्यं सुखानि च ।
किं नो राज्येन गोविन्द किं भोगैर्जीवितेन वा ॥ 32 ॥

na kāṅkṣē vijayaṃ kṛṣṇa na cha rājyaṃ sukhāni cha ।

kiṃ nō rājyēna gōvinda kiṃ bhōgairjīvitēna vā ॥ 32 ॥

Meaning - O Krishna!  I want neither victory nor kingdom and happiness . O Govinda! What is beneficial to us by kingdom, enjoyment or being alive.

SHREEMAD BHAGAVAD GEETA CHAPTER -1 PART -1

 प्रथमोऽध्यायः  
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvācha ।

धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे समवेता युयुत्सवः।
मामका पाण्डवाश्चैव किमकुर्वत सञ्जय॥१॥
dharmakṣētrē kurukṣētrē samavētā yuyutsavaḥ ।
māmakāḥ pāṇḍavāśchaiva kimakurvata sañjaya ॥ 1 ॥

Meaning - 
  Dhritarastra said,
 O Sanjay! The hostile sons of mine and Pandu who gathered in the righteous place the Kurukshetra, what did they do?


सञ्जय उवाच ।

दृष्ट्वा तु पाण्डवानीकं व्यूढं दुर्योधनस्तदा ।
आचार्यमुपसङ्गम्य राजा वचनमब्रवीत् ॥ 2 ॥

sañjaya uvācha ।
dṛṣṭvā tu pāṇḍavānīkaṃ vyūḍhaṃ duryōdhanastadā ।
āchāryamupasaṅgamya rājā vachanamabravīt ॥ 2 ॥

Meaning -
   Sanjay said, seeing the arrangement of the Pandava's soldiers, O King! Duryodhan went to his preceptor and said these words. (2)

पश्यैतां पाण्डुपुत्राणामाचार्य महतीं चमूम् ।
व्यूढां द्रुपदपुत्रेण तव शिष्येण धीमता ॥ 3 ॥
paśyaitāṃ pāṇḍuputrāṇāmāchārya mahatīṃ chamūm ।
vyūḍhāṃ drupadaputrēṇa tava śiṣyēṇa dhīmatā ॥ 3 ॥

Meaning -
   O teacher! See this tremendous army of Pandavas which was intelligently arranged by your wise disciples, the sons of Drupada. (3)

अत्र शूरा महेष्वासा भीमार्जुनसमा युधि ।
युयुधानो विराटश्च द्रुपदश्च महारथः ॥ 4 ॥
atra śūrā mahēṣvāsā bhīmārjunasamā yudhi ।
yuyudhānō virāṭaścha drupadaścha mahārathaḥ ॥ 4 ॥

Meaning -
   Like Bheema and Arjuna, there are many valiant and great archers such as warrior Yuyudhan, Virat and Drupad present in this army. (4)

धृष्टकेतुश्चेकितानः काशिराजश्च वीर्यवान् ।
पुरुजित्कुन्तिभोजश्च शैब्यश्च नरपुङ्गवः ॥ 5 ॥
dhṛṣṭakētuśchēkitānaḥ kāśirājaścha vīryavān ।
purujitkuntibhōjaścha śaibyaścha narapuṅgavaḥ ॥ 5 ॥

Meaning -
   Even with them excellent warriors are there like Dhrustaketu, Chekitana Kashiraj, Purujit, Kuntibhoj and Shaivya. (5)


युधामन्युश्च विक्रान्त उत्तमौजाश्च वीर्यवान् ।

सौभद्रो द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्व एव महारथाः ॥ 6 ॥

 yudhāmanyuścha vikrānta uttamaujāścha vīryavān ।

saubhadrō draupadēyāścha sarva ēva mahārathāḥ ॥ 6 ॥

Meaning -  Valiant Yudhamanyu, very powerful (/mighty) Uttamouja, sons of Subhadra and Draupadi — all of them also great warriors.(6)


अस्माकं तु विशिष्टा ये तान्निबोध द्विजोत्तम ।
नायका मम सैन्यस्य सञ्ज्ञार्थं तान्ब्रवीमि ते ॥ 7 ॥

asmākaṃ tu viśiṣṭā yē tānnibōdha dvijōttama ।
nāyakā mama sainyasya sañjñārthaṃ tānbravīmi tē ॥ 7 ॥

Meaning -   O the great priest!  For your kind information/knowledge I am telling you about the commander (/general/leader) who are excellent (/proficient/skilled) in guiding (/leading) my army.(7)  


भवान्भीष्मश्च कर्णश्च कृपश्च समितिञ्जयः ।

अश्वत्थामा विकर्णश्च सौमदत्तिस्तथैव च ॥ 8 ॥

bhavānbhīṣmaścha karṇaścha kṛpaścha samitiñjayaḥ ।
aśvatthāmā vikarṇaścha saumadattistathaiva cha ॥ 8 ॥

Meaning -  There are You ( Guru Dronacharya), grandfather Bhisma, Karna, Kripacharya, Ashvatthama, Vikarna and also Bhurishrava (the son of Somadatta) etc. who always victorious in battle.(8)


अन्ये च बहवः शूरा मदर्थे त्यक्तजीविताः ।
नानाशस्त्रप्रहरणाः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः ॥ 9 ॥

anyē cha bahavaḥ śūrā madarthē tyaktajīvitāḥ ।
nānāśastrapraharaṇāḥ sarvē yuddhaviśāradāḥ ॥ 9 ॥

Meaning -  Like them  there are also other many warriors who ready to abandon life(/willing to run any risk) for me. All are possessing with different weapons and proficient in war. (9)

अपर्याप्तं तदस्माकं बलं भीष्माभिरक्षितम् ।
पर्याप्तं त्विदमेतेषां बलं भीमाभिरक्षितम् ॥ 10 ॥

 aparyāptaṃ tadasmākaṃ balaṃ bhīṣmābhirakṣitam ।

paryāptaṃ tvidamētēṣāṃ balaṃ bhīmābhirakṣitam ॥ 10 ॥

10.  Our strength ( power/ might/ vigour) is unlimited and we are completely protected by grandfather Bheesma. But the strength of Pandavas is limited even it is well-protected  by Bheema.

अयनेषु च सर्वेषु यथाभागमवस्थिताः ।
भीष्ममेवाभिरक्षन्तु भवन्तः सर्व एव हि॥ 11 ॥

ayanēṣu cha sarvēṣu yathābhāgamavasthitāḥ ।

bhīṣmamēvābhirakṣantu bhavantaḥ sarva ēva hi ॥ 11 ॥

All of you, from all the entrances to the arrays of troops each in his respective place should definitely help or give protection to Grandfather Bheesma.

तस्य सञ्जनयन्हर्षं कुरुवृद्धः पितामहः ।

सिंहनादं विनद्योच्चैः शङ्खं दध्मौ प्रतापवान् ॥ 

tasya sañjanayanharṣaṃ kuruvṛddhaḥ pitāmahaḥ ।

siṃhanādaṃ vinadyōchchaiḥ śaṅkhaṃ dadhmau pratāpavān ॥ 12 ॥


12. At that moment , Kauravas eldest and powerful grandfather Bheesma  sounded high with his conch-shell , a loud roar like a lion growing the joy( or satisfaction/exultation/gladness/rapture) of
Dhritarastra.

ततः शङ्खाश्च भेर्यश्च पणवानकगोमुखाः ।

सहसैवाभ्यहन्यन्त स शब्दस्तुमुलोऽभवत् ॥ 13 ॥

tataḥ śaṅkhāścha bhēryaścha paṇavānakagōmukhāḥ ।
sahasaivābhyahanyanta sa śabdastumulō'bhavat ॥ 13 ॥

13.  Thereafter conch, drum, bugle and clarion suddenly sounded together. That chorus sound became tumultuous/ noisy.

ततः श्वेतैर्हयैर्युक्ते महति स्यन्दने स्थितौ ।

माधवः पाण्डवश्चैव दिव्यौ शङ्खौ प्रदघ्मतुः ॥ 14 ॥

tataḥ śvētairhayairyuktē mahati syandanē sthitau ।                      mādhavaḥ pāṇḍavaśchaiva divyau śaṅkhau pradaghmatuḥ ॥ 14 ॥

14. Then (from otherside), Lord Krishna and Arjuna sounded their respective divine conch, being on the huge chariot attached with white horses. 

पाञ्चजन्यं हृषीकेशो देवदत्तं धनञ्जयः ।
पौण्ड्रं दध्मौ महाशङ्खं भीमकर्मा वृकोदरः ॥ 15 ॥

pāñchajanyaṃ hṛṣīkēśō dēvadattaṃ dhanañjayaḥ ।

pauṇḍraṃ dadhmau mahāśaṅkhaṃ bhīmakarmā vṛkōdaraḥ ॥ 15 ॥

15.  Lord Krishna sounded 'Panchjanya', His own conch. Arjun sounded his conch 'Devadatta'. Bheema, the wolf-bellied(devouring/craving food in great quantities) and of terrific prowess, sounded his frightening/fearful conch 'Poundra'.    

अनन्तविजयं राजा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
नकुलः सहदेवश्च सुघोषमणिपुष्पकौ ॥ 16 ॥

anantavijayaṃ rājā kuntīputrō yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ।
nakulaḥ sahadēvaścha sughōṣamaṇipuṣpakau ॥ 16 

16.  O King! The son of Kunti, king Yudhisthir sounded his conch named 'Anantavijaya'. Both Nakula and Sahadeva also sounded their conches i.e. 'Sughosa' and 'Manipuspak'.
